Ravi Samy, MD, has been named Chief of Division of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). Dr. Samy comes from University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he served as neurotology/skull-base surgery division chief and director of the Neurotology Fellowship and Auditory Brainstem Implant and Cochlear Implant Program.

Dr. Samy's vision of making LVHN and the otolaryngology, head and neck surgery program a regional, national and international presence is what we want, and he is certainly the right person to get us there. - Michael Pasquale, MD, Chair, Department of Surgery, Physician in Chief, Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical Excellence, and Interim Physician in Chief, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, LVHN

Clinical specialties

Dr. Samy performs a range of services and procedures in pediatric and adult otology and neurotology, with a specialty in skull-base tumor resection.

“Dr. Samy is a very well-respected otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon who brings a unique skill set – lateral skull-base surgery – which helps us expand our current skull-base program,” says Michael Pasquale, MD, Chair, Department of Surgery, Physician in Chief, Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical Excellence, and Interim Physician in Chief, Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, LVHN.

He also specializes in hearing loss, working with cochlear implantation, auditory brainstem implementation, implantable hearing devices and bone conduction devices in adults and children. In addition, Dr. Samy also treats tinnitus, dizziness, chronic ear infections, cerebrospinal fluid leaks and facial nerve disorders.

Vision for the future

Dr. Samy says that delivering compassionate, high-quality patient care is his first priority, and he plans to expand the reach of LVHN otolaryngology, head and neck surgery to become a world-renowned program. He will begin with a rebranding, new residency program, new international skull-base surgery fellowship, and strong focus on academic training and research.

“Dr. Samy is a natural teacher who will help oversee the residency program and grow it, so we’ll be training the best and the brightest, growing our own,” Pasquale says. “His vision of making LVHN and the otolaryngology, head and neck surgery program a regional, national and international presence is what we want, and he is certainly the right person to get us there.”

Our surgeons have a depth and breadth of surgical knowledge that’s unmatched in the area, with expertise in less invasive techniques and robotic technology.University of Cincinnati / Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center Gardner Neuroscience Institute and the program director of the Neurotology Fellowship at the UC College of Medicine since 2005. He is also the director of the Adult Auditory Implant Program as well as a Professor of Otolaryngology beginning on September 1, 2020.

Dr. Samy was born in what is now known as Chennai, India, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 4. After living for one year in Canton, Ohio and 3 years in Connecticut, he spent most of his formative years living in Texas.  He went tDuke University in North Carolina for his undergraduate education. After graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in zoology, Dr. Samy attended the Duke University School of Medicine until his graduation in 1995. He then completed his resident training at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he developed a love for otology, neurotology and skull base surgery. Dr. Samy spent two years at the University of Iowa as a Neurotology fellow before moving back to Texas to be an assistant professor at the UT-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Dr. Samy decided to move to Cincinnati because he was enamored with the phenomenal academic opportunity he found in the Department of Otolaryngology at UCMC and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). During his time at UCMC he has created an ACGME accredited, two-year Neurotology fellowship, which is one of approximately 15 in the country.

His research interests include cochlear and auditory brainstem implantation as well as acoustic neuromas, neurofibromatosis type 2, facial nerve tumors and other diseases and disorders of the lateral skull base.

Dr. Samy is also interested in using novel techniques and technologies to eradicate tumors, such as the use of surgical robotic systems or synthetic biology in the form of bacterial robotics systems. He is collaborating with researchers in India to incorporate these technologies to enhance global health and increase collaboration between UC and international institutions, thus benefiting both US citizens and those of other nations.

The Importance of Focus

"Imagine who you could be, and then aim single-mindedly at that."

Jordan Peterson
I never could have achieved success in my life, including and especially skull base surgery, without focus.  I also thank my parents, my teachers, and my mentors in life to help me realize this.
