How Do I Get Ready for Surgery?

Prehab

Prehab is a term used in the healthcare industry to refer to a proactive approach to injury prevention and rehabilitation. The goal of prehab is to prepare individuals for an upcoming surgery or injury, with the aim of reducing post-operative complications and speeding up the recovery process. Prehabilitation programs typically involve exercise, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes that improve overall health and fitness levels. By engaging in prehabilitation, individuals can reduce the risk of complications and achieve better outcomes after surgery or injury.  Prior to any otologic/neurotologic/skullbase procedure, make sure you are as healthy as possible!

If you are scheduled for surgery, there are several things you can do to prepare for the procedure:

1. Consult with your surgeon and medical team: Before the surgery, you will have a consultation with your surgeon and medical team. They will explain the procedure, its risks and benefits, and what to expect during your recovery.

2. Follow pre-operative instructions: Your surgeon will likely provide you with specific instructions to follow before the surgery. These may include fasting for a certain period of time, stopping certain medications, and avoiding smoking.

3. Arrange for post-operative care: You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery, and you may need assistance with daily activities during your recovery. Arrange for a family member or friend to help you during this time.

4. Pack a hospital bag: Bring a bag with comfortable clothing, toiletries, and any other items you may need during your hospital stay.

5. Stay healthy: Leading up to the surgery, it's important to stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, getting enough rest, and avoiding illness.

6. Ask questions: If you have any questions or concerns about the surgery, don't hesitate to ask your surgeon or medical team. They are there to help you through the process and ensure the best possible outcome.
