What is TMJ Arthralgia?

How Do I Treat TMJ Arthralgia?

TMJ Arthralgia—Coping with Jaw Pain

Chronic jaw pain from a condition called temporomandibular joint arthralgia (TMJ arthralgia) can be difficult to cope with. If you are experiencing this type of pain, there are a few strategies that may help you regain control of your comfort.

First, identify the sources of your pain. TMJ arthralgia can be caused by damage to the cartilage in the joint, stress, and medical conditions such as arthritis. Identifying the source of your pain can help you create an effective treatment plan.

Second, reduce inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medications can help to reduce discomfort and swelling. Ice packs applied to the affected area can also help reduce swelling and pain.

Third, practice relaxation techniques. TMJ arthralgia can be exacerbated by stress, so relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing can help to relieve the tension in the jaw and reduce pain.

Fourth, maintain proper posture. Poor posture can put extra strain on the jaw, leading to increased pain. Make sure to sit and stand with your shoulders relaxed and your head and neck in alignment.

Fifth, use a mouthguard. If you grind your teeth while you sleep, a mouthguard can help to reduce the damage to your jaw and decrease pain.

Finally, address underlying medical conditions. If your TMJ arthralgia is due to a medical condition such as arthritis, treating the condition can help to reduce pain.

TMJ arthralgia can be a challenging condition to manage, but there are strategies that can help you cope. Identifying the sources of your pain, reducing inflammation, practicing relaxation techniques, maintaining proper posture, using a mouthguard, and addressing underlying medical conditions can all help to improve your comfort and manage your pain.
